INTRODUCTION TO THE MALTESE
If you are owned by,or are looking for a Maltese, then Congratulations are in order. The Maltese is known as the "THE ARISTOCRAT of the DOG WORLD" for good reasons. The Maltese has been in existence for thousands of years. Ancient Greek and Egyptian art depict Maltese being held in high esteem.
The Maltese is the most ancient toy breed of Europe, hailing from the Mediterranean island of Malta, an ancient trading port. The first written evidence of the Maltese comes from the third century B.C. Over the centuries this breed has been known by many names, including the 'Shock Dog', 'Maltese Lion Dog', 'Roman Ladies Dog', as well as 'Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta'. They were prized by aristocrats, statespersons and royalty. The Maltese was also thought to possess healing powers. The ailing would place the dog on their chest for comfort. For this reason they became known as the 'Comforter'.
The name 'Maltese' was only assigned in the 19th century. The breed's origins are unknown;in any case, the small,white Maltese remained isolated on the island of Malta for centuries and hence stayed true to breed. Eventually, they were exported throughout Europe and became popular with the upper class, purportedly including Mary Queen of Scotts, Josephine Bonaparte, and Marie Antoinette. The Maltese was first imported to America in the 1870's and recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888.*
Throughout the ages, Maltese have served one purpose -- to be a loyal and loveable companion to its master. It is a job the Maltese takes quite seriously. Centuries of perfecting their craft have given us today's modern Maltese, a heavenly creature like no other. Their only desire is to please you and be near you. We are also dedicated to protecting them from unscrupulous persons that would use their beauty for profit.
